Curaçao: LGBT Friendly Caribbean Travel Destination
Curaçao is a great vacation destination by all standards. Beaches, accommodations, activities, culturally speaking and much more. What sets Curaçao apart and makes it unique in the Caribbean is the “Biba i laga Biba!” mentality of our people. The “Live and let Live!” mentality is what makes the island such a LGBT welcoming travel destinations. The people of Curaçao are friendly and tolerant and the island does not have a history of gay violence towards LGBT locals or visitors.
It is true that the island still needs to make some progress in equality for the gay community and that Curaçao has its share of close minded people. In general however, you will by no means experience problems going to dinner in one of the many restaurants or enjoying a nice beach day or just walking around in our capital, Willemstad.
Curaçao has been embracing the LGBT Travel Community for a long time already. In 2004, the Curaçao Tourism Board launched GayCuracao.com. In addition the CTB has created multiple LGBT marketing campaigns and continues in an effort to become one of the most welcoming destinations in the Caribbean.
LGBT Friendly Curaçao
Curaçao officially does not have any gay bars. This is partly due to the size of the community, but also due to the fact that a large number of bars are LGBT welcoming and inclusive. As such, there are plenty of hot spots and parties that attract a lot of gays and lesbians. Additionally, you will find that quite a large number of our LGBT community are working in hospitality and they tend to make sure that you have a great time!
Curaçao does not have a gay beach per say, but we do have the adults only gay friendly Moomba beach at Floris suite hotel. There are plenty of beaches that are LGBT welcoming and inclusive. For an overview of our favorites, please click here.
Testament to the fact that Curacao is not just saying that we are LGBT friendly is the fact the Curaçao has the highest membership rate in the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA). In 2015 the IGLTA honored the Curaçao Tourism Board as Destination Pioneer for putting this island on the map for LGBT travel. Moreover, the Chairman of the Caribbean Travel Association (CTO) acknowledged Curaçao as leading destination for LGBT travelers in the Caribbean in 2015.
This has everything to do with the “Biba i laga Biba!” mentality of our people. Come and experience it for yourself. Curaçao is waiting for your arrival.
The combination of a population of around 150.000 inhabitants and the fact that a relative high number of people have (not yet) stepped out of the closet, makes the local gay community that is out and proud relatively small. This makes the ones that are out and proud a very tight-knit community of friendly and warm locals. The atmosphere within the community is quite familiar and relaxed and as a tourist you get in contact with locals quite easily.
The LGBT community on the island is very active. Besides organizing Curaçao Pride and other parties they also work on pushing for equality.
The island does not have a gayborhood as you would encounter in other major cities around the world. We do however have a very gay friendly hotel and a quirky bar for the night owls, which although not an official gay bar it is mostly only frequented by gays. As part of the “Live and let Live!” mentality there are plenty of places to go and activities to do that are LGBT welcoming.
The highlight of the year is the Curaçao Pride. This event takes place every year around the end of September and beginning of October. During the 5 days that the Pride lasts there are plenty of parties and activities you can enjoy.
The first edition of the Curaçao Pride took place in 2013 and is getting bigger and better!
Every year the organizers of the Curaçao Pride publish a pride magazine “The Gay Villager”. The magazine gives information about the Curaçao Pride, but also talks about the gay lifestyle in Curaçao. Check out curacaopride.com
LGBT Parties & Events
During the year there are plenty of LGBT parties and events. There is a weekly LGBT happy hour at the Floris Suite Hotel. In addition to this there is a LGBT party that is held regularly.
